Vancouver - the food - part 1

Our first meal in North America was breakfast at Canada Place in Vancouver...lesson number one - people were not joking about the size of servings here. I mean come on thats completely ridiculous! Particularly after a complete lack of sleep...

After some much needed sleep....J and I walked down to Gastown and had our first meal at Beer Heaven - aka the Bitter Tasting Room. Lets just say this place made J very happy and would make a meat eater even happier. J tasted a number of beers from BC (Switchback, Whiteback and Baldwin and Cooper), while I indulged in a lovely glass of Joie Riesling. Thankfully for me alongside beer and meatie goodness, this place offered some great vegie snacks. We had some Devilled Eggs and an amazing Fried Green Onion Polenta with White Bean Puree. Wow. What a start to foodie holiday adventures.

After dinner snacks...yay I am back in the land of cheddar popcorn, cranberry juice and lots of little sushi stores...

Yesterday we visited Granville Island....foodie heaven. Yum...I will dream about this place for months...

Lunch was great too...and what do you know...more beer to taste...this holiday is going to be tough for J.

Chocolates from Granville Island....

Nachos from the pub...reminder that serving sizes are ridiculous!

A first glimpse of Vancouver

I have flown into Vancouver Airport four times now for work-related adventures. It was fabulous to see those beautiful mountains again and this time know that I actually get to explore this gorgeous city.

The view from the plane really is quite breathtaking (J no seinfeld jokes please...) - even for me, as after 14 hours of flying my mood generally changes from terror to panic to boredom to "will somebody please just get me off this flying death tube" to wow its beautiful up here. I never claimed to make sense.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I wish I could sleep on planes. I really do. 14 hours in the air - not counting the admin either side - makes for a long and exhausting day, but after a nap under the warm BC sun and a strong cup of tea I'm beginning to feel human again!

Canada time for team orange

Greetings all. I have set up this blog so that Sir Jason and I, Lady Catherine, are able to record our thoughts, stories, observations and embarassing moments from our upcoming holiday - and no doubt upload a photo or two to make you all feel jealous as per the ways of modern world.

So where are we going? We are flying (*shudders*) directly to Vancouver in late June and spending a few days there, then over about 6-7 weeks we will be visiting, Jasper, Seattle, Chicago, Washington, New York, Boston, Niagara Falls, Toronto, Halifax, Prince Edward Island, Quebec City, Montreal and Ottawa. We are travelling mainly by train with a few hire cars thrown in as well.

I am hoping it will be lots of fun. Its a bit weird as we actually had a 6 week holiday to Europe and Russia planned, but changed our plans unexpectedly. I have been to Canada twice for work recently and just loved it - so I was keen to return and spend some proper time there without having to negotiate any international agreements! I have never had any desire to go to the USA, but Sir Jason wishes to have many a Woody Allen moment in New York - so hence the itinerary. Hopefully I shall cope and find things to eat that are not fried and not glutenesque...but I shall not be reading the bible on the train as suggested by Jay.

I am most looking forward to: seeing Vancouver, the train up to Jasper through the mountains, eating in New York and finally seeing the MET, seeing where my Russian relatives arrived in New York and lived in Boston, Quebec City, going to Osheaga festival for a day in Montreal, being an Anne of Green Gables dag on PEI and getting to show Jay the Ottawa that I have fallen in love with.

Plus there is that whole 7 weeks away from work thing and some proper Jay time. Did I mention 7 weeks, 7 whole weeks....so excited its stupid.
